This is the 20th year I have been coming to schools to give out
the Physics Prize. On many occasions I talked about how we are
working towards bringing to WA the world's largest radio teleskope,
the billion dollar Square Kilometre Array. It was awarded in 2013, and now, the construction has begun in the Murchison Shire
North-West of Geraldton.
The complete construction will take a decade, but fantastic science
will be done along the way. Accordingly,
we need engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians and
physicists. To attract the brightest students, Curtin has the
Advanced Physics degree that combines world-class Mathematics,
Computer Science and Physics. In addition, there is the Electrical Engineering-Physics double degree. The graduates will have some of the best careers either here in WA, or anywhere else in the world. So, if you love maths and physics, and don't we all, please join us!
This year's book-prize is entitled "Extreme Cosmos", written by an eminent
Astrophysicist Professor Bryan Gaensler. It gives
me great pleasure to award this prize to Lechen (Leo) Wang.
